I am often required to underake a branding or re-branding excersise.
this i undertake with professionalism an sensitivity, the process is not
unlike naming a child!

In a branding for a new company the 'image' has no history and therefore
with the individuals tasked to manage this excersise - usually the MD I 
ask questions about values, markets both current expectations and future
plans for expansion. 

I then move the process on by asking the client to gather a number of 
examples that they admire. I have found this a very effective way to save
time and leapfrog an often expensive and time consuming process of
elimination.
